Adinkra for Camberwell - Public Consultation

Denmark Hill is getting a new public artwork by Godfried Donkor. Camberwell Arts in partnership with Camberwell Society, SE5 Forum and Kings College Hospital are managing the installation of a new sculpture for Denmark Hill Station, under the supervision of Network Rail.

The commission was announced as part of the 2020 Summer Festival and will be unveiled in Spring/Summer 2021 at the new entrance being opened at the station.

Camberwell Arts has been a partner in the Identity Group for Camberwell since it was conceived in 2019. The project has already completed the Camberwell Banners project and commissioned one of the four planned murals for the Borough. Pic below, artist: Lionel Stanhope

The new work was required to fit the theme of Health and Well-being. Camberwell is not only home three major medical institutions but is even said to be built on the site of a well with healing properties. Camberwell’s motto is ‘All’s Well’. Check out the brief here.

The commission was awarded to Godfried Donkor, a British-Ghanaian artist based in Brixton. Adinkra for Camberwell is his first public artwork and will use traditional Ghanaian symbols or ‘Adinkra’ to illuminate Camberwell’s connection to health and wellbeing. We may even get a new Adinkra for Camberwell.

I managed two public consultation sessions on Godfried’s project on the 24 & 25 September, as well as the public poll where local people voted for their favourite Adinkra. Keep an eye out at Denmark Hill for the finished piece! #CamberwellAdinkra
