RMG Live: Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year Competition 2020 Awards Ceremony

Like every other major event this year, the Insight Investment Astronomy Award Competition moved online for 2020. The IIAPY2020 competition, managed by Lysi Calderwood for Royal Museums Greenwich, received over 1000 entrants from 73 countries.

Work started in July to produce a ‘live’ digital event with a blend of pre-recorded and live content to be streamed to the RMG website and social channels. Technical and production management was provided by Event Concept’s, Kris O’Brien, Adam Wright & Craig Irvine.

In addition to shooting and editing two days of on-site filming with ROG Senior Astronomer Dr Emily Drabek-Maunder and comedian Jon Culshaw, EC and RMG collaborated on stitching together the shortlisted images into a compelling video sequence. Additional speeches by RMG Director Paddy Rodgers and Insight Investment Global Head of Marketing, David Chellew topped and tailed the film.

On 10 September 2020 @ 18.30, the video went out to astrophotographers (and the public) across the world on Facebook, YouTube and the RMG website. Around 19.15 we switched to Emily & Jon for a live Q&A from the Great Equatorial Telescope.

The live-stream saw over 1.1million impressions on Facebook, with a further 1517 joining live on YouTube.

Following the live-stream, we hosted a special and very large Zoom party for the shortlisted astrophotographers, managed by ROG Astronomer Dr Greg Brown.

Thanks to all at Event Concept, Sophie Hagel, and David Chellew at Insight Investment and the whole RMG Astro Comp Project Team.
